LeRoy “Pete” Moffett was born July 3, 1921, in Gibbon to James and Matie (Ginther) Moffett. He grew up on a farm near Gibbon, attending District 18 School and Gibbon High School finishing his education in the 10th grade. He was accompanied by 8 brothers and 11 sisters.
He was inducted into the Army on September 2, 1942 at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He was a PFC with the 30th Division, Company M, 117th Infantry serving during World War II.
On June 6th, 1944 he was critically wounded on Omaha Beach. May 3, 1945 he was honorably discharged from military service. He received the Purple Heart medal, a Bronze Star, and European, African and Middle East theater ribbons.
On Nov. 2, 1945, he married Betty Riley in Shelton, where they made their home and raised two children. Daughter Elizabeth E Obermiller and Step Son Ron Diercks
He had worked for 27 years at Lacy Building and Supply in Grand Island, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelton, the American Legion Post 297 of Shelton, VFW Post 759 of Kearney, life member of the DAV Chapter 14 and the Platt-Duetsche of Grand Island.
